#22265 write high-level overview of bootstrap process catalyst Webpages/Website website redesign
Description

There needs to be a better high-level overview of the bootstrap process so developers, users, and UX people can have a better mental model of what's going on, what can go wrong, and how to fix it when it does.

Probably should be a wiki page unless someone has a better idea of where to put it. There is some text in control-spec.txt that is a decent starting point, but could use more elaboration of background material.

#30751 why SHA-256 or MD5 not in download section? hiro Webpages/Website
Description

Hi. Thanks for very good service. This is not a bug. In download page i do not see any sha-256 or md5 for checksum downloaded file. i have seen GPG in: https://support.torproject.org/tbb/how-to-verify-signature/

but it hard method. Please beside GPG, write md5 and SHA-256 for checking file! It is very important PGP test for many people is hard.

#24231 users looking for Tor Browser uninstall instructions should find the correct ones traumschule Webpages/Website website redesign
Description

It's too easy for users who are trying to uninstall Tor Browser on macOS to find https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-osx.html.en#uninstall and try to follow its instructions (which won't usually work). The FAQ text at https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en#HowUninstallTor that links to it also could use improvement. There might be similar ambiguous/misleading instructions elsewhere; I haven't exhaustively checked.

#21178 torproject.org submenus and page structures behave inconsistently hiro Webpages/Website WebsiteV3
Description

I've found some behavioral inconsistencies in torproject.org, which I think can confuse our visitors. It would be great if we could fix some of these things.

  1. If you go to the "About Tor" page or the "Contact" pages, both are highlighted in the horizontal menu. (to view: https://www.torproject.org/about/overview.html.en)
  1. About Tor > Projects leads to "Software and Services" (https://www.torproject.org/projects/projects.html.en). I think that this should be consistently named.
  1. About Tor > Projects does does not redirect to a different page and has submenu items visible from the About Tor page. About Tor > Documentation and About Tor > Projects both do. My suggestion is to making Tor People redirect to a separate page with a separate vertical side menu, but also having the About Tor> Projects and About Tor > Documentation menus nested in the vertical menu on About Tor is also acceptable, as long as these side menus behave consistently.
  1. Some pages are blank: https://www.torproject.org/docs/manual.html.en, https://www.torproject.org/docs/installguide.html.en. This is bad because it makes them look broken. I don't have a better idea of what to put here without restructuring the whole website contents, but I think at the very least it should not be blank.
  1. You can browse to some pages that have different styling (go https://www.torproject.org/docs/documentation.html.en, click "Install Tor Browser" to get to https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en), which really throws me off. It looks like it's a different site, or I've been redirected/scammed. I think there are other instances of this, but I can't recall every instance of where this happened.
  1. This may not be too big of an issue, but the main menu (Tor Home About Tor Documentation Press Blog Contact) keeps the current tab highlighted if the user is in that tab (Press is highlighted on https://www.torproject.org/press/press.html.en), but this doesn't happen for the submenu (Download Volunteer Donate)--the volunteer page https://www.torproject.org/getinvolved/volunteer.html.en does not have volunteer highlighted.

#30678 remove hardcoded capitalization from tpo css and templates hiro Webpages/Website
Description

this does not work well in many languages. capitalization should be on the string itself.

#31295 please server Tor signature files with Content-Disposition that encourages a download rather than inline viewing hiro Webpages/Website
Description

When i click on the sig link in https://www.torproject.org/download/ (which points to https://www.torproject.org/dist/torbrowser/8.5.4/torbrowser-install-win64-8.5.4_en-US.exe.asc ) i find the OpenPGP signature displayed in the browser directly, rather than being saved to a file.

But the instructions for verifying the OpenPGP signature seem to assume that the signature file has been downloaded as a file.

If you use Content-Disposition you should be able to encourage the web browser to save the signatures as a file in the same way that the installer is a file.

I'm attaching a HAR archive of what my browser (Firefox 68) did when clicking on the sig link, which i think verifies that no Content-Disposition header was sent.

#24206 newsletter subscription sends me to donate.torproject.org hiro Webpages/Website website redesign
Description

When I try to sign up for the newsletter at newsletter.torproject.org, the confirmation link that I get in my email is for donate.torproject.org, not newsletter.torproject.org.

To me this feels like a bait-and-switch, where I asked to receive news and suddenly I'm going to be on some donation rolodex.

I guess we used the donate site because it was easier to run the newsletter software there? How hard would it be to separate them? Or at least to send URLs for newsletter, and have that redirect behind the scenes?

#27412 make bug tracker links on getinvolved page accessible without login qbi Webpages/Website
Description

The bug tracker link to Tor on https://www.torproject.org/getinvolved/volunteer.html.en requires a trac account. It is very unlikely that anyone visiting this page for the first time (like after clicking "Get Involved" on about:tor) is logged in.

This longer link gives the same result without login.

I don't know though if this should be fixed in trac or the website.

#30327 https://newsletter.torproject.org overlaps text as width is too small on my phone antonela Webpages/Website
Description

Testing on a Samsungs Galaxy S5 mini I realized there is overlapping text on https://newsletter.torproject.org in the Archive section (the dates overlap with text so that the result is hardly readable). See attachment for how this looks like.

#29945 fiscal documents page has missing docs, typos, and wrong labels hiro Webpages/Website
Description

On https://www.torproject.org/about/reports/

The first problem is that all of the financial documents are 404.

The second problem is that it says "Steate" three times when it should say "State"

The third is that it labels "2016-12-05 Tor Project Bylaws" as an audit when it's actually more like a corporate document. It also calls some of the Form PCs audits, when instead they are the State version of a (federal) form 990. But the 2011 Form 990 doesn't have the "Form 990" label, and is instead an audit? Somebody needs to sort these out.

Thanks!
