#10439 new enhancement

Allow TBB 3.x to run multiple times in parallel

If I want to run two TBB 3.5's at once, I'm out of luck because the Tor ports conflict and they're hard-coded.

Vidalia solved this by having a checkbox for 'choose ports automatically', which starts Tor with "socksport auto" and "controlport auto" and then reads the file specified to Tor by ControlPortWriteToFile to learn what control port it picked.

Should we teach Tor Launcher to do something similar?

Maybe a reasonable place for the interface toggle is in the proxy settings window?

You are right that there convenient / GUI way to run with different ports. I haven't tested it, but the following manual configuration should work:

1) Start TBB and go to about:config.
Edit the hidden preference extensions.torlauncher.control_port to specify a new control port.
Torbutton will also pick up the control port from this pref.

2) Open Torbutton's preferences and change the SOCKS port under Proxy Settings.
You'll need to "Use custom proxy settings" to edit this field.
(Doing this modifies extensions.torbutton.settings_method to "custom" and extensions.torbutton.socks_port to the new port number.)

3) Exit TBB.

4) Use your favorite editor to change Data/Tor/torrc.
Add SocksPort and ControlPort directives to tell tor to use the ports you configured above.

Is there anything that would prevent Tor Launcher from passing the ControlPort and SocksPort directives on tor command line using the values of extensions.torlauncher.control_port and extensions.torbutton.settings_method?

Maybe it's a bad idea, but this would better follow the DRY principle.

Changing port configuration during startup is blocked on #8511. We can't currently change the SOCKS port without an additional restart, or a fix for that issue.
