#10472 closed enhancement (fixed)

Pass command line arguments to Firefox

start-tor-browser script reads:

# XXX Someday we should pass whatever command-line arguments we got
# (probably filenames or URLs) to Firefox.

Now that Vidalia is removed from the bundle, passing command line parameters from start-tor-browser to Firefox seems straightforward.

This could be very convenient for launching TBB with a specific URL to run tests or experiments. See also comment by Roger:

Applying the attached minimal patch, all command line arguments (except TBB's own --debug) were successfully passed to Firefox binary.

Some commands that worked for me were as follows (Ubuntu 12.04 & TBB v3.5):

  • ./start-tor-browser

  • ./start-tor-browser about:tor
open about:tor and (will open 2 tabs)

  • ./start-tor-browser -search Tor
search for the word "Tor" using TBB's default search engine (startpage)

  • ./start-tor-browser --debug
run TBB in debug mode and open

Still, no serious thoughts were given about the issues this may bring.

Someone just posted a gist somewhere for this too, though I lost track of that ticket.

Could it be that one: ?

It's same patch with additional comments and was posted on the Tor StackExchange thread mentioned above.

This is merged. It should appear in the next nightly at, in 3.6-beta-1, and in the next 3.5 release.
