Torbutton actually disables the back button when you first toggle. Does it never work?

You should try browsing a set of sites in a single Tor mode. For example, do a Google search, click on a link,
click on a link in that page, and then click on another link in that page, all without toggling the Tor button.

Does this still break?

Back and forward work fine for me in FF3.6 with Torbutton 1.2.4 and no other addons installed.

Without any more details. I'm going to mark this as notabug/worksforme.

flyspray2trac: bug closed.
Could be an addon conflict, or a problem specific to 3.6 beta5. Please refile with new details if it still happens in 3.6.
