I'm volunteering to make this quick change... if you agree that it's a good idea.
Word from the virtualenv install docs http://www.virtualenv.org/en/latest/virtualenv.html#installation :
"""We advise installing virtualenv-1.9 or greater. Prior to version 1.9, the pip included in virtualenv did not not download from PyPI over SSL."""
oh dear no SSL here... this ancient version of virtualenv (from a wheezy package) uses it's own ancient version of pip :
ooni-probe@ho:/testing/ooni-probe$ source /home/ooni-probe/.virtualenvs/ooniprobe/bin/activate
(ooniprobe)ooni-probe@ho:/testing/ooni-probe$ which pip
/home/ooni-probe/.virtualenvs/ooniprobe/bin/pip
(ooniprobe)ooni-probe@ho:/testing/ooni-probe$ /home/ooni-probe/.virtualenvs/ooniprobe/bin/pip --version
pip 1.1 from /home/ooni-probe/.virtualenvs/ooniprobe/lib/python2.7/site-packages/pip-1.1-py2.7.egg (python 2.7)
(ooniprobe)ooni-probe@ho:/testing/ooni-probe$
