add option to hide TBB's logo

Description

Speaking as a user of Tails and a maintainer of Whonix, I want to point out, that showing the Tor Browser Bundle Logo when using tor-launcher only for configuring Tor without TBB is inappropriate and confusing. It should not be shown in that mode.

Could you please add either:

  • an environment variable such as TOR_HIDE_LOGO, or
  • maybe it is enough to omit src/chrome/skin/tbb-logo.png when creating the standalone target using the Makefile

Is it desirable to use a different, more generic Tor logo instead?

My vote would be to change the standalone target to remove or substitute a different image.

Replying to mcs:

No, because of trademark issues.

That'd be fine!

or substitute a different image.

Maybe an environment variable to configure a custom logo in some arbitrary location?

We added a way to use a custom logo. Just build like this:

make TL_LOGO=my-logo.png standalone

You can use TL_LOGO=- to remove the logo (but it will not look as good since the space for the logo is still there).

The file that TL_LOGO points to should be a 115 x 80 pixel PNG. Use transparent pixels if you want to use a smaller image.

Is it an option for building? I guess proper asked for a variable which would change the behavior of default builds
