TBB/Vidalia/Power Comsumption

Background: I travel on public transport for several hours a day. I read news whilst traveling with a laptop: Tor Browser with many open tabs.

Various web sites ( is one) deliver content which causes tor (not the browser, the socks proxy) to flatline a CPU. Turning Tor off, via Vidalia, stops this (thus longer battery life and cooler laptop and can still read the news).

Please make it possible to stop/start the proxy again without terminating the browser.

Behaviour is true for TBB 3.6.3 (and previous to when Vidalia disappeared/was merged).

OS: Linux MINT

uname -a: Linux <hostname> 3.5.0-17-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 9 19:31:23 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Hardware: Lenovo T430.

PS: My username here is also the name of my exit relay. My direct contact details are published there (see atlas etc.). Tor is a beautiful thing (thx).

I wonder what those web sites are doing... one alternative that might solve this problem without stopping and restarting tor would be to place the browser in offline mode when you want to prevent open pages from accessing the network.

Related to stopping and restarting tor: the changes we made to Tor Launcher for #11199 provide a way to restart tor if it exits. You will need to manually kill the tor process since we do not provide a GUI within the browser that allows you to stop tor. When the browser asks if you want to restart it, choose Cancel. Then, you can restart tor later from within the Tor Network Settings window.

Will one of these alternatives meet your needs? The #11199 changes will be included in Tor Browser 4.0a1, which will probably be avsailable within the next week.
