Pidgin-IRC leaks (OS) user name

Description (last modified by phobos)

Pidgin, unless configured otherwise, uses the system user name
as the username in IRC. This seems bad for anonymity; it should
probably be set to the user's nick. It leaks the fact that one
is using libpurple in both the real name (by default) and in
/VERSION requests.

Do you know a config option to not leak the username? If so, we could set it in the default config.

Pidgin's IRC plugin does have configuration fields for both the ‘user name’ and ‘real name’ accessible in the GUI. I haven't used Pidgin for any other IM protocol.

Can we close this or is it still relevant? (considering Tor Messenger won't be based on Pidgin)
