Description

Every blog post on https://blog.torproject.org/ should be tweeted by @torproject. I propose using https://ifttt.com/ to make that automatic.

I would second the idea to use IFTTT, but would warn that, even though IFTTT uses Twitter's OAUTH API, IFTTT requests the "IFTTT would like to be able send tweets as you" permission. But perhaps this is not a problem for us, and the convenience of automated blog post tweeting overrides any paranoid schizophrenic concerns that some disgruntled IFTTT employee might suddenly decide to tweet "New Tor Browser available at https://torbrowserbundle.com" from the @torproject account.

Of course, there's already the danger of a disgruntled Twitter or Tor employee... ;) I agree it incurs a slight extra risk, and if, in the future, someone wants to replace IFTTT with a home-grown script, I'm in favor. But I think it would be good at least to use IFTTT as a first version.

Andrew, as the curator of the @torproject Twitter account, would you be willing to set up an IFTTT recipe that automatically tweets titles and links to each new blog entry?

I did a trial run and it took about 10 minutes, including setting up an account for https://ifttt.com. The recipe turned out to be

Feed (https://blog.torproject.org/blog/feed) -> Twitter ( {{EntryTitle}} {{EntryUrl}} )

where "Feed" is IFTTT's name for RSS.

Thanks! :)

After further investigation, I see that IFTTT is rewriting all URLs with their own URL shortener (e.g., ift.tt/1tbWVHZ). That's obviously for tracking users, and pretty obnoxious. So I withdraw my suggestion to use IFTTT. My apologies.

Closing ticket because it's good to tweet these individually so that we can time them for maximum exposure (retweets, etc.).
