#1392 new defect

Torbutton Addon interferes with toolbar buttons for add-ons (including its own)

Reported by: ds332@… Owned by:
Priority: High Milestone: Torbutton: 1.2.5
Component: Applications/Torbutton Version: Torbutton: 1.2.5
Severity: Normal Keywords: Firefox toolbar

Description

If Torbutton 1.2.5 is enabled in Firefox 3.6.3 64 bit Linux additional Firefox windows (either launching a second instance of Firefox or selecting File->New Window) are missing any toolbar buttons for add-ons (such as icons for Flashblock, AdBlock, and Torbutton). The buttons are also missing if a "restart" of Firefox is performed (as opposed to closing and restarting Firefox which does not cause the problem). It does not matter if you actually choose to display the Torbutton status in the toolbar or not for this to happen, and icons in the status bar are not affected. Disabling Torbutton results in the icons appearing in all Firefox windows. This behavior is also caused independently by the Ubuntu add-on Ubuntu Firefox Modifications 0.9rc2 and I have reported it to them as well. However, either of these add-ons causes this behavior alone and it does not appear to be an interaction between the two.

Can you please try to create a new firefox profile ('firefox -P' from the shell) and try to install the minimal set of addons that cause this problem?

We've had a number of reports of this type of problem, but so far have not received enough detail to reproduce it.

It's having some weird and unpredictable conflict with Tab Mix Plus. I say this because it must depend on some setting within Tab Mix Plus in that installing it on a new profile didn't immediately cause the problem, but disabling Tab Mix Plus in my usual profile SOMETIMES fixed the problem, but it wasn't consistent either. However, nothing else affected it. I'll file a bug at Tab Mix Plus as well.

Hrmm.. That's not much of a response, and the sticky they refer you to appears to be a general debugging procedure. Can you ask them if anyone has gone through the process and gotten to the root of the issue?

We do have other bugs filed for Tab Mix Plus weirdness, but I've never gotten to the bottom of them. Whenever I install it, it seems to work fine.

Apparently it only happens in Ubuntu (or maybe 64 bit Linux). I have a shared profile between 64 bit Ubuntu and Windows XP SP2 on my dual boot laptop and I can enable TorButton and TabMixPlus in Windows without encountering this problem. Obviously Ubuntu Firefox Modifications doesn't work in Windows anyway. I don't know if that helps any.

On 32bit ubuntu 10.04 with Firefox 3.6.3, Torbutton 1.2.5 enabled, and the DownloadHelper add-on (disabled by Torbutton), the symptoms do not occur.

Can you try torbutton 1.3.1-alpha? It has some related fixes that may fix this.
