Starting with creating a proper toolchain for cross-compilation is probably a fine idea: https://marcelog.github.io/articles/cross_freebsd_compiler_in_linux.html is one example tutorial.

I am not convinced yet, that we should provide BSD binaries. I think the better model is getting this organized together with BSD volunteers so that the latter is providing binaries (as attila e.g. does/did).
