When creating an account in Tor Messenger 0.0.5, the server is preset to "jabber.ccc.de". As the XMPP options are hidden by default this probably won't be caught by people who don't know what to look for when authorization with the server fails.
To upload designs, you'll need to enable LFS and have an admin enable hashed storage. More information

Good catch. The XMPP option needs some more work which we have documented in tickets #13855 (closed) and #12097 (closed). The issue you described should be fixed when we work on these two tickets. For the current release, we just picked jabber.ccc.de.
Future releases will allow you to pick a server (with harcoded onion addresses) and also allow you to create a new XMPP account from within Tor Messenger.

How is this related to #13855 (closed) and #12097 (closed) and why jabber.ccc.de? Why not blah.im, jabber.otr.im or others?
Be a bit considerate of the people who run jabber.ccc.de, please.
If you would like to put some other server as default, but don't have a trust chain, I could do some outreach to get permission from some of the nicer but unknown services.
With #13855 (closed), we plan to have a dropdown menu where users can choose between different XMPP servers (in which case Tor Messenger will use their onion addresses). So there will be multiple servers to choose from (Riseup, jabber.ccc.de, etc.)
Why jabber.ccc.de? Well for one because we "trust" the server (even though you shouldn't trust any server and also every conversation is encrypted) and because many people use it. Also, since in-band XMPP registration is not supported yet, you would need an existing account with jabber.ccc.de (or you will need to create an account with Pidgin) to use it.
We are no longer setting the default server to jabber.ccc.de. The current default is jabber.org (default in Instantbird) and users have to manually enter the server they want to use. We do make it easy by configuring HS access for known servers (see #13855 (closed) for the list) but otherwise we don't set any defaults.
