New users to tbb seem to expect this page to be a portal that contains a search engine search box, related tor news, related releases, to tell them if their tbb is out of date, and hints on what to do now that they are anonymous on the internet.

Many people like http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/4.0.1/whatsnew/ as an example of introducing a technology to new users.

Here's one idea for a new layout and design, http://jmtodaro.com/tor/TorCheck-concept01.jpg

I like them!

(For the failure case, what does the 'community forums' link to? Also, linking to the wiki probably isn't going to help confused users in any way.)

If we want to get fancier, in the failure case when we link to the Tor docs, we could look at the user-agent to decide what link to use.

We should keep in mind Mikeperry's hopes of embedding some xml in the html here that Torbutton can use to figure out if your TBB is out of date. But I think at this stage that goal is orthogonal.

When can we roll it out? :)

Something else that's missing is the ability to click on something to choose a different language for the page.

It should autodetect the language from tbb, when tbb supports different languages via torbutton.

The better answer is that each TBB makes a request to its own language on check.tpo by appending lang= to the query string. Such as https://check.torproject.org/?lang=de

Right. Each TBB does this already (or should).

But do we really mean to have the ability to switch languages be a secret feature that you can't learn about from looking at the page?

I can imagine cases where that's a good idea (why clutter the page) but also cases where it's a bad idea (I'm using my friend's Korean TBB, and if I could just get Tor to show pages in English I'd be on my way).

Here are a few more examples of the "sorry" design with altered colors:

Purple w/ red "sorry" text

Red

And here's the html version of the success page, http://www.jmtodaro.com/tor/check/ It's tiny, fast, and loads very quick over tor, via tbb and android orbot.

I like the grey with red text failure page.

The "exit node" info is not typically available to check,
and in fact it can't always be determined accurately.

Other than that, it looks pretty nice imo! Maybe make the
langauge names a tiny bit bigger, and remove the
"also available in those languages" part - that's kind of
obvious when you see all the langauges listed?

And here they are, as html versions rather than images, http://www.jmtodaro.com/tor/check/

To us, not to others apparently.

The new check design is at https://svn.torproject.org/svn/projects/misc/phobos/2011-check_redesign_files.tar.gz just waiting to be integrated into the existing tor-check codebase.

Closing this ticket, and creating a new one for the actual integration.
