I'm on Windows version of TorBrowser 5.0a2 and I'm not able to disable the re-size function:

  • "extensions.torbutton.resize_windows" IS false (and persistent)
  • as long as "extensions.torbutton.startup_resize_period" is set to true, every browser window is getting resized (not just on startup)
  • if I set "extensions.torbutton.startup_resize_period" to false, NONE of the browser windows is getting resized (but that setting is reset to true on a browser restart)

I was able to further track this down, but don't know what happens. My Tor Browser has NoScript removed (I don't like the addond very much, I use Adblock Edge, Ghostery and RequestPolicy Continued) and when I use a fresh install of TB 5.0a3 the resizing is disabled, when I uninstall NoScript (clean install, NONE of my addons yet installed) the resizing starts to get crazy and can't be persistently disabled! Does this help?

Well this is not as clear as I thought it was yesterday. Sometimes the browser on startup refuses to stop resizing, sometimes it stays disabled. Also I'm not using the default set private-mode for Tor Browser, that could also be related in terms of session storage problems perhaps. Anyway this is not smooth yet and I'd still suggest an UI option for the resizing stuff.

Further observation: The resize-off setting works, if my startpage is just "about:tor", if any other website is set (or was open - remember I use session restore and non-private browsing) the resize-function is enabled (which is what I don't want and seems bugged)!

Is this still an issue?

Resolution: user disappeared

In addition to the user having disappeared I think this is a non-issue with Letterboxing.
