Description

We are currently shipping Tor Browser with one self-contained profile making it effectively not possible to use it in multi-user mode. We might want to think about ways to change that. This would resolve one blocker for getting Tor Browser into Debian or make it usable in a Windows environment with multiple users.

How does this impact tor itself?

I can imagine two different models:

  • single tor instance
    • possible cache/timing leaks between users, particularly with hidden services
      • but I think we're working on this????
    • the existing domain isolation could be extended to deal with multiple users
  • multiple tor instances
    • since users have different guards, their traffic is more distinguishable
    • systems with many users could run low on resources: ports, processes, CPU, etc.
      • it's wasteful to download identical consensuses and descriptors in each instance
