Description (last modified by teor)

List Name: tor-onions at lists dot torproject dot org
List Maintainer: teor2345 at gmail dot com
List Description: technical discussion about running Tor onion (hidden) services

It will default to being public and archived, which is what we want.

(I'm happy to be the list moderator, but if it needs to be someone more closely associated with the tor project, we could ask asn or dgoulet.)

I feel this is great - after all I kinda suggested it - but that the proposed group name lacks descriptiveness given what I envision to be the content:

  • how to configure high availability: heartbeats, STONITH, etc
  • experiences in scaling bandwith, ideas and plans
  • hacking your webserver to use CSP to report links which have not been onionified

"Onion Sites" sounds like it may be an index of onionsites out in the wild, to do with searching and so forth. How about "onion-tech@..." as an alternative?

I'm happy with onion-tech@.

Revised request:

List Name: onion-tech@…
List Maintainer: teor2345@…
List Description: technical discussion about running high-volume Tor onion (hidden) services

(We've also had tor-onions@ recommended on IRC.)

comment:4 Changed 4 years ago by alecmuffett

well, if we want a fourth suggestion we could have "tor-onion-tech" because "tor-onions" is, again, nondescriptive of the intent.

But, practically, whatever. I would rather we had a maillist called "eric" and we could start discussing the topic, rather than expend further time on naming.

For consistency with the other mailing lists, let's go with:

List Name: tor-onion-tech@…
List Maintainer: teor2345@…
List Description: technical discussion about running high-volume Tor onion (hidden) services

Hello,

I like the idea of a mailing list for hidden service operators. I think there
is no good space for hidden service operators to ask technical questions on how
to setup their infrastructure. [tor-talk] is about users and crazy people,
[tor-relays] is about relays and [tor-dev] is about proposals. Here are some
questions that I wouldn't know where to ask:

  • "How to setup load balancing for my hidden service?"
  • "How to make my hidden service scale?"
  • "How to protect my hidden service against DoS?"
  • "What's the best way to setup my infrastructure for hidden services?"
  • "Why hidden service authentication does not work??!?"

I imagine that a mailing list for HS operators would make people more
comfortable asking such questions, and it could also be a place to point new
people setting up HSes and wanting tech support. A bit like [tor-relays] but
for hidden services.

What about if we broaden the scope slightly and make it:

List Description: Technical discussion about running Tor onion (hidden) services

so that we get posts even from people who have trouble setting up HSes but
don't think of themselves as running a high-volume HS.

I'm fine with [tor-onions] and [tor-onion-tech].

I think all in all it's a good idea! It will also serve as knowledge base for HS operator over time. One thing though is I really DO NOT want this list to turn into "tor-dev-hs" so as long as we make this clear, this is a great idea imo.

I'm fine with [tor-onions] and [tor-onion-tech].

[tor-onions] is great.

I also think this list would be useful.

I'm ok with either name. I think "tor-onions" might be a simpler name (as a parallel to tor-relays) so long as enough smart folks participate that it doesn't degrade into the worries that Alec had (e.g. a list name without the word 'tech' in it could attract all sorts of other people).

Cool!

So who will bell this cat and actually go create the list?

Description: modified (diff)

OK, here's the final request (also updated the description):

List Name: tor-onions at lists dot torproject dot org
List Maintainer: teor2345 at gmail dot com
List Description: technical discussion about running Tor onion (hidden) services

I'm not on tor-internal, so atagar or qbi need to signoff on this request.

@qbi or @atagar: You can put me as well as a maintainer since I did support this idea and I would like to not let my friends down alone maintaining this. The more the merrier anyway.

Aaand here is the list: https://lists.torproject.org/pipermail/tor-onions/

We should write a welcome message for the list, and probably announce it somewhere.

Hello there,

just letting you know I sent a welcome message to [tor-onions]:
https://lists.torproject.org/pipermail/tor-onions/2016-January/000010.html
(for some reason mailman removed [tor-onions] from the end of the subject line...)

And also a mail to [tor-talk] informing people of the new mailing list:
https://lists.torproject.org/pipermail/tor-talk/2016-January/040060.html

I think that's sufficient for launching it. We could even make a blog post, but maybe that's too much.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
