#19115 closed enhancement (fixed)

Make sure Tor Browser 6.0 is not falling back to Bing as its search engine

Disconnect does not have access to Google search results anymore. At least not at the moment. The fallback is Bing which gives a horrible search experience to our users. We should make sure that this does not happen in Tor Browser 6.0.

Some options are:

1) Go back to Startpage (at least temporarily) for Google results
2) Switch to DuckDuckGo directly
3) Use Disconnect but set DuckDuckGo as the engine delivering the search results.

The plan as I understood it is that Geko and/or Isabela (somebody pick one?) are going to ask disconnect for some statistics on how many searches Tor Browser users produce, and that will help Shari figure out how smart it would be for us to point at DuckDuckGo directly.

And in the mean time, the decision for TB 6.0 (between option 2 and option 3) is not super critical, since we can always change things in a point release once we have a clearer answer.

Right now if I enter a search term into Disconnects search results, and choose DuckDuckGo, and press enter, I see the following message:

Just a heads-up, because DuckDuckGo takes user privacy seriously, search queries go directly to them, unlike other search engines which are proxied through Disconnect

Then the browser is redirected to the DuckDuckGo site to show the search results. So I think Option (3) from this ticket's description doesn't have any advantage over Option (2). It looks to me like a choice between (1) and (2), at least until Disconnect can get access to Google again.

Disconnect helped us getting 3) going without the need for any Tor Browser changes (thanks!) which is fine for 6.0.

I think so, is more desirable switch direct to duckduckgo, because:

  1. redirect you to, not to http://3g2upl4pq6kufc4m.onion/.
  1. If you are using tor in medium-high or high setting you are not using javascript for DDG by default.

Well, the disconnect redirect you to a version of site that requite JS, and you need to click to swith to non-JS version of DDG, but if you are using DDG it automatic detecte non-js contest.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
