#19990 closed defect (wontfix)

EntryNodes is incompatible with IPv6-only bootstrap

Reported by: teor Owned by: teor
Priority: Medium Milestone: Tor: 0.3.3.x-final
Component: Core Tor/Tor Version: Tor:
Severity: Normal Keywords: ipv6 tor-client robustness bootstrap sponsor8-maybe
Cc: Actual Points: 0.1
Parent ID: #20916 Points: 2
Reviewer: Sponsor:

When UseMicrodescriptors is 1, tor clients which bootstrap over IPv6 have to get descriptors from the fallback directories, because there are no IPv6 addresses in the microdescriptor consensus.

When EntryNodes is set, it excludes all the fallback directories, meaning that IPv6 clients can't bootstrap.

This can be tested with:

src/or/tor DataDirectory /tmp/tor.$$ SOCKSPort 0 EntryNodes x ClientUseIPv4 0

Finally admitting that 0.3.??? was a euphemism for Tor: unspecified all along.

#20916 will also fix this, we can close this when it closes.

We need to test this once we've merged the rest of #20916.

We need to test that setting EntryNodes non-fallback and ClientUseIPv4 0 works on a network that is running consensus method 27 or 28.

Does EntryNodes block authorities?
I guess it does?

We might need to wait to test this on the live network, or we might need to add fallbacks to chutney.

Or we say that users get to keep the pieces when they set that option without including a fallback?

Well, they currently get to keep the pieces, because we ignore some kinds of EntryNodes settings until we have a consensus.

So you're right, I think we close this one as "this will get better when everyone runs 0.3.3, but you still get to keep the pieces if you set EntryNodes badly".
