Tor is running as an NT service... When I start TorCP the right Tor version is also detected.
But after a while TorCP doesn't still recognize Tor and reports that the detected version is unknown.
So it must be restarted to enable all the functions.

Is TorCP connected to Tor (i.e., has a little green checkmark in the tray icon)? Did your Tor
service stop at some point and TorCP just didn't reconnect to it? How long is "awhile"?
Are you still able to do other things like monitor bandwidth, but just the version comes
up as "unknown"?

TorCP asks Tor what its version is via the control protocol and the "unknown" usually means
the control socket isn't connected (i.e., little red X in the tray icon).

ok, I try to give you some explanations.

Tor is running as an service with the torrc file that has been moved from "username\application data\tor" to "programs\tor"

when I start the Tor service, Tor is launched and all the cache files are created in default user\applicaton data\tor
with my settings "torrc" in programs/tor

when I start TorCP and the Tor service isn't still installed Tor is launched "normally" and the cache files are created
in username\application data\tor (ignoring my settings cos my torrc file isn't still available here...)

I install again the Tor service, restart TorCP (detected Tor version ok)
I open the window "settings/service" and try to uninstall the Tor service.
Sometimes both steps work perfectly, sometimes I get the message "tor failed to stop in a timely fashion" and I
have to press again the uninstall button: service is stopped, uninstalled and Tor is removed from memory.
Then, if I press "cancel" window closes and nothing else happens. If I press "ok" window closes too, but Tor is relaunched "normally" ! (that's boring !)
I open again the "settings/service" window, install the service... Tor is shortly removed from memory and relaunched, now with my settings and the detected version is 0.1.18.
If I press "cancel" window closes and the detected version is still But, if I press "ok" window closes and...

  • green checkmark is still in the tray icon (Tor: running; Controller: connected)
  • detected version: unknown
  • Send signal fails
  • Tor can be stopped but message: tor failed to stop in a timely fashion
  • Controller can be disconnected
  • Message Log: ok
  • Configure Tor: unable to load configuration values
  • Bandwidth Graph: ok
