apple.com "connection is not secure" error

Seen in Tor Browser by Mozilla QA.

https://apple.com fails, but https://www.apple.com does not fail.

Yes, that happens in a vanilla Firefox ESR as well. Actually even in the latest nightly. So, not sure whether we should track that here. Is there a Mozilla upstream bug somewhere?

According to Qualys SSL Labs https://apple.com sends an incomplete certificate chain, see https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=apple.com

Seems to be an Apple bug then we can't do anything about.
