Tor embedded with TBB 7.5a2 ignores torrc

This version of Tor, which comes embedded in TorBrowser 7.5a2, seems to read only torrc-defaults when TBB is launched. Thus any changes (such as adding a second SocksPort line to torrc) get ignored unless they are made to torrc-defaults.

In particular, ps aux | grep -i tor.real yields the following (note the argument passed to the --defaults-torrc flag):

heywood            1799   0.0  0.5  2482880  39152   ??  S    11:36AM   0:01.92 ./tor.real --defaults-torrc /Applications/ -f /Users/heywood/Library/Application Support/TorBrowser-Data/Tor/torrc [...] +__ControlPort 9151 +__SocksPort IPv6Traffic PreferIPv6 KeepAliveIsolateSOCKSAuth __OwningControllerProcess 1798

Moreover, if I quit TBB, move the torrc file out of ~/Library/Application Support/TorBrowser-Data/ and restart TBB, torrc gets created there anew, but it is empty (zero bytes).

This works for me. I was able to add a SocksPort line to my torrc file, open Tor Browser, and then use the additional port.

Make sure that Tor Browser and tor.real are not running when you edit the file:

/Users/heywood/Library/Application Support/TorBrowser-Data/Tor/torrc

If it is still not working, please attach your torrc file to this ticket.

Ah, OK, I think I see the issue. Are changes to torrc supposed to be made by editing

/Users/heywood/Library/Application Support/TorBrowser-Data/Tor/torrc

before (re)starting TBB? As I noted in my original report, under normal conditions on my machine, with TBB running:

  • the former is an empty file;
  • making changes to the latter (with TBB not running) and then launching TBB doesn't do anything; and
  • making changes to torrc-defaults in the latter's directory DOES result in a second SocksPort.

(FWIW, I'm checking for open ports using nmap -v localhost -p 9000-9200 .)

If editing the former is the correct way to go, then I'm all set and this ticket can be closed. But in that case I would suggest adding this info to the appropriate place in the Tor/TBB documentation.

The changes should be made to the file inside your Application Support folder not to any file beneath the .app folder. (Besides not working, when an update for a new version of Tor Browser comes out it will replace files in that folder.)

Colin -- can we add some documentation about what torrc file should be edited (how to find it on each platform)?
