Description

I suggest the a change to the New Identity message in Vidalia. Now it says, "All subsequent connections will appear to be different than your old connections."
It should say, "All subsequent connections will appear to be different *from* your old connections."

Either of them sounds plausible to me (depending on what we intend to mean).

I wouldn't object to the change.

As I understand it, both “different than” and “different from” are acceptable there, although I prefer “different from” (and didn't know that “different than” was valid at all until relatively recently).

But both messages are inaccurate -- subsequent connections will be ‘different from’ the user's old connections, whether the user pushes the ‘New Identity’ button or not. What we mean is: “Subsequent connections will not be linkable to your old connections.”

Except not really -- we don't even try to do something NEWNYM-ish to Polipo or Firefox, and we can't tell other programs that the user has told to connect through Tor to ‘use a new identity’.

I don't know how to convey what that button actually does accurately without using the term “circuit”, and users are unlikely to understand that.

Given that both phrasings are acceptable, and since changing it to something regarding circuits will only lead to more confusion, I'd rather leave this as it is right now.

Thanks everyone for the input. Please re-open if any of you would like to keep discussing this.
