Tor Browser gives a confusing and unhelpful "Tor unexpectly exited" message. Can we be more helpful?

Here are some questions and some things to try:

From your screenshot, it looks like you are on Windows. Has Tor Browser ever worked on that computer?

Make sure no tor.exe process are running on your system before you start Tor Browser.

Does anything appear on your system clipboard after you click the "Copy Tor Log To Clipboard" button? Please add the log as an attachment to this ticket if there is anything there.

Sometimes antivirus (AV) or other types of antimalware software interfere with Tor Browser. Does it help to whitelist tor.exe or otherwise ensure that no interference is taking place? Maybe you can try disabling or temporarily uninstalling any AV software.

I've seen this happen on Linux when starting Tor Browser for the first time after deferring a restart after an autoupdate (7.5a5 to 7.5a6, maybe?). I had to quit Tor Browser completely to get it to start cleanly. (Clicking "Restart Tor" didn't work.)

Interesting. It seems unlikely that we can blame AV software on Linux. The next time that happens, check and see if there is a leftover tor process (it should exit when the firefox process exits since the latter is the owning controller, but maybe it does not always do so).
