Description

Tor stops working when opening new tab. I don't know why, but I have the debug report from Visual Studio: Unhandled exception at 0x6850687D (d2d1.dll) in firefox.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x6DCAC3F0.
The first tab is still completely usable, and other features are accessible too.
Version is the latest at the time of ticket creation but number is unknown because unable to open settings.

Can you open about:config? If so, what are your values for gfx.direct2d.disabled and layers.acceleration.disabled?

Nope, crashes upon opening. And now, every time I try to search something, tab goes to the Gah, your tab just crashed thing. When I try to restore it, it just takes me to my home page. :(

Now it's even worse. I downloaded a fresh install of Tor on my PC, installed it on a separate directory, and it worked fine at first, but today it's appearing to have the same problem. It seems like to happen after I changed to go into homepage directly and have my homepage as a custom StartPage setting link. Not sure why, but could be cause by system environments. Running Windows 10, Version 1709, Build 16299.64, x64. Using bootcamp on a MacBook Air (Which caused some other problems before). The problem shouldn't be across systems because Tor works perfectly on macos.

What exactly did you do? Could you give us steps to reproduce?

Just updated Tor Browser with itself. Still crashed so it's definitely plugin or settings. Will try to reproduce today.

Tor is not a browser. Firefox tries to detect graphics features when opening new tab. Unfortunately, it activates "hardware acceleration" for it even when it's disabled. So, the only question here is whether Firefox handles this exception by design (but tbb doesn't support seh) or it's a bug in your setup.

The first tab is still completely usable, and other features are accessible too.
Version is the latest at the time of ticket creation but number is unknown because unable to open settings.

So, actually, "Tor" doesn't crash, right? (only one thread crashed)
Or do you see the same as in #9145?

How does it go if one follows the steps in https://lists.torproject.org/pipermail/tor-talk/2013-June/028564.html to work around the problem?
