Germany was experiencing a significant increase in users months earlier.

Maybe people trying out the Tor Browser for privacy reasons after hearing about the Mozilla fiasco related to that "Mr. Robot" addon that was installed on everyone's browser? (Mozilla apologized for it: You can read about the whole fiasco here: )

Forget about the explanation above, as it happened way before that fiasco happened :)

On 2018-03-05 (see doc/MetricsTimeline): "Steady drop in the number of relay users in Germany, from 1.5M to 650k. (Drop coincides with the release of tor,, and, which offer better resistance against DoS attacks)"

That these clients were part of the DoS attack, and dropped off when mitigations for the attack were shipped, is the best we currently have for explanation.

If anyone has more to add, or thinks there is a way we can investigate this further, please reopen the ticket.
