tor.exe exits on startup with no error on Windows 10 64-bit
I installed Tor from torbrowser-install-7.0.11_en-US.exe downloaded 2018-01-13 09:22 UTC. I can't tell you exactly which version for reasons that will be clear.
I initially tried to run it as a service, invoking the Windows service that the installer put there. I got this response: Windows could not start the Tor Win32 Service service on Local Computer. Error 1064: An exception occurred in the service when handling the control request. A responder on Stack Overflow suggested that I run the program not as a service. I tried that, and I discovered that the program exits on startup with no message, apparently in all circumstances.
Sample console session follows, run as Administrator (though this makes no difference, I checked):
