#25283 closed task (fixed)

Decide when we can turn off atlas.torproject.org

Description

metrics-web and metrics-bot have both been updated, but there are probably a lot of other place that would need to have URLs updated.

Would it be possible to use webstats to determine when atlas.torproject.org usage has died down enough that we can turn it off?

Some places that we would need to consider:

  • any documentation aimed at Tor relay operators
  • consumers of Onionoo that may link to Relay Search

the old url is also here (bio): https://twitter.com/toratlas
also consider migrating to a new twitter handle to reflect the name change
https://twitter.com/RelaySearch is available

Good catch. I've updated the @TorAtlas twitter account to point its URL to metrics.torproject.org instead. I've also added metrics.torproject.org to the bio for @metricsbot[at]botsin.space (Mastodon). In the future I'd like to introduce other tweets/toots that are not solely based on Onionoo/Relay Search data but also based on the Metrics CSV files so the name is probably fine to remain as it is.

Replying to cypherpunks:

Don't forget to take it down from this list https://onion.torproject.org/

This would happen automatically when the service is retired.

I would be inclined to not update the blog posts and instead just write new blog posts about cool new things instead, like after #23509 is implemented for example. I'm not sure how many people are reading the older blog posts but I imagine it tails off after a while.

Edit: This wasn't merged, but the old links were removed (apparently it was obsolete code).

Yes:

I included the number of site requests to cloud.tp.o for comparison. We shut down that site in May 2015. Just to show that the numbers don't go down to 0 but to a few hundred per day.

Regardless, I think a good time to turn off atlas.torproject.org was in the second half of 2018. Those short-term peaks at the end of 2018 and in the first half of 2019 are nothing to worry about.

So, stated differently: I'd say that we can finally turn it off now! Changing to needs_review for irl to spot.
