Dan Boneh is teaching a class next quarter on circumvention and anonymity. The students will break up into groups and do research projects on various topics. One of the topics I'd like him to cover is the "can we take advantage of existing resources in these countries to get those resources to covertly scan our bridges" question.

I should write up my preliminary thoughts and assumptions here in more detail.

I'll write this up, feed me with any preliminary thoughts you have other than what we have already talked about.

I talked to Dan's student about the idea in person, and Dan's student will be writing up a project summary after this quarter is over. I'd say our best shot is to wait and see what that says.

Incidentally, Jed Crandall of UNM has a paper at Usenix Sec last year on idle scanning that might be a valuable approach here too.

In the mean time I think I'm going to close this trac entry as resolved, even though no actual blog post appeared.
