Description

Since the latest update on my FC5 machine, tor fails to connect through a firewall. For I am using the same torrc file for a tor client running on Win XP, I am sure that the problem lies not in a faulty torrc. In order to eliminate the possibility of SELinux or IPTables interfering with tor, I shut down both services. I also tried to erase my local .tor directory, but this seems not to be the reason for failure. Being started in debug mode, tor gives the following messages:

How did you install tor?

May 11 16:16:42.021 [info] connection_dir_client_reached_eof(): Received directory (size 0) from server '86.59.21.38'

Do you have some http proxy in between you and the Internet that is blocking large
requests? (It could be a transparent proxy like a squid on your side or at your ISP.)

comment:3 Changed 13 years ago by phobos

Have you tried tor without a torrc file?

comment:4 Changed 13 years ago by jselzer

@Andrew Lewman: I installed tor by compiling the sources in the usual "configure, make, make install" manner. Together with either a privoxy rpm or the manually compiled version, this worked well - until my last system update. Because the firewall forbids every outgoing connection except the traffic going through the proxy, it would have no use trying to connect without a proper configuration. I used the sample configuration delivered with the source tarball and added the following lines:

FascistFirewall 1
HttpProxy myproxy:80
HttpProxyAthenticator myuser:mypass
HttpsProxy myproxy:80
HttpsProxyAthenticator myuser:mypass

Port 80 is the only port the proxy allows connections to. Even the SSL connections are handled by it.

@Roger Dingledine: I cannot give too much information about the proxy because aside from using it for my outgoing traffic I have no further access to that machine. What puzzles me a bit is that my XP installation running on the same machine has no problem with my tor configuration while Fedora suddenly has. I tried to lower the MTU size from 1500 to 567 in order to avoid packet fragmentation problems but this had no effect.

I setup FC5 release last night, installed tor via rpm and all worked fine. I then updated FC5 without changing anything
else in the system. Tor continued to work fine. I don't have a proxy with which to test. However, it appears your proxy and tor on fc5 aren't interacting well.

I don't see anything obviously wrong in the strace output either.

comment:8 Changed 13 years ago by jselzer

Currently I am running tor on another up-to-date FC5 machine - without a proxy and enjoy the tool as usual. I also suspect
some undocumented change in the proxy to mess up the communication. I wouldn't worry that much about this point if the
Windows version would fail to connect either so that one could blame some new restrictive ACLs on the proxy. But the Windows

installation is doing fine. Strange world.

comment:9 Changed 13 years ago by phobos

I'm out of ideas here. Perhaps there is an ACL blocking this specific FC5 machine, or perhaps some sort of Windows
authentication passes automatically. I think you'd know about the authentication piece however.

comment:10 Changed 13 years ago by jselzer

Things look rather weird, indeed. Because I'm using a dual-boot machine, it seems improbable to me that the proxy might
block my IP or MAC address. I also thought about some Windows mechanism authenticating me in the network before tor does,
but all other programs running on my Linux installation that are communicating with the proxy (e.g. Firefox and JAP) are

doing well, so it has to be something in the way tor interacts with the OS or the proxy when connecting to a proxy that

requires authentication. Thank you very much anyway.

flyspray2trac: bug closed.
Not a bug per se, more of an outlier data point.
