It would be nice if I didn't have to open and inspect the network view to establish for a fact that an application I'm using is routing traffic through Tor.

At the moment I have to launch a request from the application, then tab over to, or open, the Vidalia network view and make sure there are active streams there.

A small indicator displaying the count of active streams in the system tray would save me this trouble. I think it would also provide useful visual feedback for any user beginning an anonymous browsing session. If they don't see the activity indicator update they know there's a problem. When they first use Tor/Vidalia/Torbutton they will get some reassurance that their setup is properly configured.

At the moment users are blind, and it is very easy to spend some time using a misconfigured torbutton or application before discovering your error.

This is a rudimentary implementation of the idea:

Was there any improvement for this or should I take the lead based on that commitdiff?

I've created an UI option. I'm working on ironing out a few bugs like if i uncheck box while it is displaying a number, the number gets stuck on the icon.

chiiph would prefer to have an option to add a miniature bandwidth graph in the system tray.

Once multiple streams are opened, Tor keeps a few streams open even when there is no traffic. Also, the user might get confused as to what the number actually indicates(speed, number of applications using Tor?).

Didn't we agree already that displaying numbers was a bad idea and we should go with a mini bandwidth graph instead?

Anyway, yes, I think it would be better if we displayed a mini bw graph instead of numbers, and there should be an option to enable/disable it.

To be clear: I think this should be a separate tray icon, but I guess you should test to see if displaying it in the same tray icon as the onion is clear enough.
