#29636 needs_revision defect

Document how we estimate users by transport by country

Description

On
https://metrics.torproject.org/userstats-bridge-combined.html?country=ar
at the bottom it says
"Even though bridges don't report a combination of clients by country and transport, it's possible to derive and graph lower and upper bounds from existing usage statistics. For further details see these questions and answers about user statistics."

But the further details link doesn't tell me how this graph derives lower and upper bounds from existing usage statistics.

Maybe it is already written up somewhere, and we can link to it?

It's indeed already written up here, under "As a special case, ...". That page is already linked from the graph page, though maybe not in the most obvious way. I'd want us to make this change as part of #24422. Setting parent ID accordingly.

After having re-read the ticket description I realized that the sentence "For further details see these questions and answers about user statistics." does more harm than good.

The linked text file indeed does not say anything about lower and upper bounds of bridge users by country and transport. It's a document written in 2014 and 2015, long before this graph existed.

The link to follow is "Learn more about [...] how to reproduce the graph data.", and that link is contained on every graph page (with a different target per graph category).

I suggest that we remove the Users Q&A file from 2014/15 and all links to it and let our users discover the Reproducible Metrics page. I don't think we'd be missing anything important from the Q&A page. And if we do, we should include that either in the graph description or on the Reproducible Metrics page.

Setting to needs_review for the suggestion to remove the Users Q&A file and all links to it.

irl and I discussed this ticket. We agreed that the Q&A link could go away if we're being a bit more explicit in the graph description that the displayed numbers do not count exactly the number of users. Changing to needs_revision for that minor textual change which then doesn't need another review to be merged.
