Description

07:01 < ioerror> armadev: I think we need to add to https://www.torproject.org/download/download.html.en#warning
07:01 < ioerror> specifically g: "Do not use BitTorrent and Tor together unless you are using a system like TAIL(S)"
07:38 < armadev> ioerror: sounds good to me.
07:38 < armadev> how about putting that in at 'b',
07:38 < armadev> and expanding it to 'only use applications that have been vetted for safety. sorry, there aren't many.'
07:40 < ioerror> go for it?
07:45 < armadev> i sleep. make a trac ticket somewhere

Now we have users thinking that bittorrenting over the Tor network is a friendly thing to do so long as they're using Tails. That's not really the full message.

I think we should migrate the https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#HowcanIsharefilesanonymouslythroughTor faq entry onto the main faq, and link to that too from the download page. For example, by appending a "But even so, heavy file sharing ruins the Tor network for everyone."

I'd like to hear Jake's take on this too -- it seems he wants the message to be "stop thinking tor is unsafe, all these security things you keep hearing about are just packaging things, and there are ways of packaging tor that don't introduce those issues".

But using Bittorrent as the example here brings in extra baggage beyond that message.

Yes. We are pretty clear about telling people not to use Tor for bittorrent and bulk transfer in general elsewhere. I would prefer a more generic message about being careful not to use any unapproved program without defense-in-depth.. This also extends to things like pdfs and doc files that you work with anonymously too.

Replying to phobos:

no one seems to care about the text enough to change it, so closing this again.

Reopening this ticket; I made a website commit with some text (torrent-specific).
