amazon 'cloud' images as bridges

Description

We need to create an amazon 'cloud instance' image that defaults to a bridge. The second test is to change the IP address of the instance every once in a while to make sure it all works.

I put my scripts for prepping an image in git during the Tor hack fest.

22:39 < ioerror> Runa: did you see my script for the cloud stuff?
22:39 < ioerror> Runa: all we need to do is prep a machine with the script, remove the keys, store the image and tell people to fire it up

So, ioerror and I had a short discussion on #tor-dev:

[19:23:33] < ioerror> Runa: All we need to do is a prep a machine with the cloud.git scripts
[19:23:36] < ioerror> Runa: save the machine
[19:23:44] < ioerror> Runa: Let people run it
[19:23:52] < ioerror> That's really all that is left other than documentation and testing
[19:24:03] < ioerror> Probably a cost calculator too but that's perhaps out of scope

[19:24:41] < ioerror> I suggest you setup an amazon account, spin up a machine, test the scripts as they are documented

[19:25:11] < ioerror> and when you have a machine that is ready to go - ensure it doesn't store keys or state and save it as a public image (remove your public keys, etc)

Quick note to say that yes, I am aware of https://github.com/inf0/Tor-Cloud and will work with inf0 on this project.

Just to be clear here. We only need an image that starts up and turns itself into a bridge by default. If we can also change the IP address in some way, automatically via the interface, then great.

tor-cloud and other stuff is extra stuff that needs more thought.

Replying to phobos:

Sina had most of that ready when he emailed -assistants two months ago. But everything should be ready by Tuesday or Wednesday next week. Also, there is no way to change the IP address automatically, you need to manually stop and start the instance and then restart Tor. See #3606 for more info.

OK.

The prototype page for the Tor cloud project is up and running: http://expressiontech.org/torcloud/. The page serves images (running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) for all available regions, and it allows you to quickly set up a (rate limited) Tor bridge.

The build script itself needs some work, and we should also move the code over to https://gitweb.torproject.org/tor-cloud.git. However, this ticket was all about creating a working prototype and showing that we have images that run as bridges by default.
