Description

Many first-time users are attempting to configure VPNs on Tor Browser, some of whom mistakenly believe VPN usage is critical to protecting their privacy.

This ticket is to review the existing onboarding flow as an education opportunity, and amend as required to provide up to date advice on VPN use.

For reference, the onboarding flow currently discusses VPNs in the third slide here:

https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/raw-attachment/ticket/30514/tb-onboarding-privacy.png

However either first-time users are not reading this or it is not explicit enough in its advice.

We have a short but direct bit of advice on support.tpo.org: https://support.torproject.org/faq/faq-5/

And the General FAQ in our docs has a slightly longer explanation: https://2019.www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en#IsTorLikeAVPN

So we probably need to:

  1. Update the onboarding with more direct language
  2. Link out to a more definitive explanation on support or docs (i.e. the new text Wayward is working on)
  3. Consider increasing the exposure of this topic in the onboarding if necessary, e.g. by featuring it in the slide title, using a text-highlight effect or creating a new slide entirely dedicated to this topic.

Thanks!
