Make BridgeDB send out 'Welcome' emails

Tor Weather is sending out emails to new relay operators that say 'Welcome to Tor'. The idea behind this is to make new operators feel more involved and recognized as people that are helping us.

Maybe we could choose a similar approach for BridgeDB, too. Sending an email to new bridge operators that says 'Thanks for running a bridge', and also 'Here is why your bridge might not show usage right from the beginning on, please let it stay running anyway' would be helpful.

Hm. It does mean that an attacker could trivially learn a lot of bridge operators' addresses just by watching the messages go out. We might care about that, especially given that it's not so hard to narrow down IPs based on email.

If we cared about that, we should be caring about many other related issues, like the reachability tests that decide who gets the Running flag.

I think this would be a nice place to (try to) coax bridge ops to run pluggable transports if they are not presently doing so.

We're finally using the new bridgedb website, yay! but after chatting with asn, aagbsn, and Sebastian we realized that distributing normal bridges along with PTs is not such a good idea because if a censor is looking for tor traffic it will be able to trivially detect/fingerprint PT connections if they occur within at a small time period.

However, we can't restrict distribution to only PT bridges because we have (roughly):

500 obfs2 bridges
3000 normal bridges

That would be *a lot* of normal bridges to waste, so if we can get more operators to run PTs then we can feel less bad about ignoring ORPorts.

Resolution: wontfix
Status: newclosed

Normally, we do callouts on blog.tpo or on the tor-dev mailing list. As a bridge operator, I would frankly be rather annoyed to get a plaintext "Welcome!" email.

I am going to close this as "won't fix". If someone has something more to say, or some compelling reason to keep this ticket floating around, then feel free to reopen it.
