Description

With 0.2.3.1-alpha, we now have 3 active release series: 0.2.1.x-stable, 0.2.2.x-alpha (soon to be beta or rc) and 0.2.3.x-alpha. We need to rejigger download.wml and versions.wml so that 0.2.3.1-alpha source can get listed. Later, we even want want to be able to have 3 active sets of packages, so we should keep the possibility in mind.

Phobos, I think you asked me to assign this to you. If not, please assign to somebody appropriate.

How much longer until 0.2.2 becomes -stable?

I looked at adding a 3rd branch to download.wml last night and realized it's a nightmare on top of an already nightmarish download page.

three active release branches is too many. heck, 2 is too many in my opinion.  leaving it as -stable and -alpha is fine. adding -alpha-alpha is just going to confuse things even more.

I suggest we scrap the idea of having 0.2.3x on the download page for now. When 0.2.2.x becomes -stable, we have 0.2.3x as -alpha.

now that the 0.2.2.x is stable, 0.2.3 is alpha and is on the download page.

Reopening and renaming. 0.2.2.x-alpha is now a thing of the past, but it's possible that 0.2.3.x-alpha and 0.2.4.x-alpha might exist at the same time! Given our ambitions of getting releases out faster, and given our deliverables of putting features out at particular times, it's all but certain that sooner or later we'll want to put out one of the later alpha/beta/rc releases of series X while at the same time we have stable releases of X-1 and early alphas of X+1.

I argue that we cannot support three branches of tor in any sane way. We can barely keep up with two branches right now.

I have no intention of working on this. If someone else wants to figure it out, great. My statement above still stands.

I suspect phobos is right.

We could imagine having a "shiny new testing versions" page or something. Maybe even on the wiki. Or just sent via emails to the tor-talk list.

But I don't think we should make our download page even more unusable -- it won't accomplish the goal of getting people to test new versions.
