#31117 needs_information defect

On connect (app start), Tor Browser (Android) produces "Warning: Unresponsive script" dialog on home screen.

Severity: Normal Keywords: tbb-mobile

  • On Kitkat
  • Open Tor Browser
  • Click "Connect" to the Tor network (after a successful connection the Tor Browser opens automatically)

At this moment a popup dialog appears. I'm going to try and repeat this verbatim, the heading of the pop-up reads "Warning: Unresponsive script". The body of the dialog says:

"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: moz-extension://5c52665b-1b57-...53/background-scripts/rules.js:323

The usual "Stop script" and "Continue" buttons.

While the dialogue is on the screen the Tor home screen/page can be seen in the background. It is basically appears that a page produced by the Tor team has some kind of error.

All versions of Tor Browser for Android that I've updated to have been presenting this dialog. I did not report it because I assumed that someone else would, but it seems that has not eventuated. I cannot remember if the first version (that worked on Kitkat) had this problem but definitely every other version has.

I assume this happens on every start? If so, could you try setting the javascript.options.wasm preference to true in about:config and report back whether that changes things for you?

Yes it's disabled at the moment. I cannot choose to enable it at this time.

Yes it happens on every start.

More specifically, I choose not to enable it at this time.

How do other installations deal with the failure to load it?

Replying to torlove:

More specifically, I choose not to enable it at this time.

Okay. Let us know when you do and the results you get, so we can make progress on this bug.

How do other installations deal with the failure to load it?

We are not aware of other installations with this bug.

Very similiar to my ticket #32789 (unanswered):
Anyone with low-enough system resources can suffer from this.

Both scripts (yours/mine) belong to the HTTPS-Everywhere extension!
To verify this, just disable the extension, then restart Tor.

To give scripts more run-time before displaying popups:
Increase the # of seconds at dom.max_script_run_time.

Thanks for posting!
