Description

The torbrowser for android in the f-droid guardian repository crashes
on visiting a page of one of the biggest broadcasters in austria.

Steps to reproduce:

  • Between 8:00 and 8:15 CET visit the page https://oe1.orf.at/player
  • Wait until the page is loaded
  • Select the news-broadcast of that day 7:00 CET.
  • Torbrowser crashes most of the time while loading the page.

This is true for the security settings "standard" and "secure".

This was tested on two mobiles.
Spec of first mobile:

  • Android 7.1
  • fresh install of "Tor Browser" 68.3.0 (2015620379) arm64-v8a from Guardian Project
  • or fresh install of "Tor Browser Alpha" 68.3.0 (2015621155) arm64-v8a from Guardian Project

Hrm. I tested this on Android 10, but I haven't triggered a crash, even after refreshing the page a few times and restarting the app.

  1. I loaded the webpage: https://oe1.orf.at/player
  2. I selected "Fr 13." from the list of days
  3. I selected "7:00 Ö1 Morgenjournal"

The audio recording loaded and began playing without crashing.

I'll try these steps again on Android 7.x.

Replying to sysrqb:

I'll try these steps again on Android 7.x.

FWIW: I tried on android 9 and had the same results as you (no crashing)

Thanks Thorin! I've tried reproducing this on two different devices running Android 7.1 (7.1.1 and 7.1.2), but I still haven't had any luck. This includes loading Morgenjournal from "Fr 13" and "Mo 16".

WerHaus, you said "Between 8:00 and 8:15 CET", is this important? Do you only experience the crash during that time? If you visit the webpage now, does the app crash? Thanks.

and.. WerHaus, if you can reproduce the crash again, does it also happen in Firefox on Android (which is also the same release: ESR68)? Thanks

I'm sorry that I have to inform you that I'm currently not experiencing the problem anymore.
I had it for over a week and tried rebooting/reinstallation etc which didn't fix it.

But currently everything works fine. Maybe they changed their website again or a advertiser moved away.

Feel free to close this issue. I will report back when this happens again. Thank you for paying attention to it.

The time was important, because it happened at least at 90% at that time. Over the day it was sometimes working ok.
