Description

Win XP with all upgrades and security patches.
2.67GHZ Pentium 4
512MB DDR Ram
G Force II Video Card, etc

I was hoping to improve performance with TOR, so I upgraded my older version of Tor v 0 0.9 to the latest version
v 0.1.1.23 (Bundled with Vidalia & Privoxy) on your download site. I restarted my computer and when Tor attempted
to connect and I got the error:

Vidalia detected that Tor exited unexpectedly.

Here is the log:

Oct 09 18:22:28:765 [Notice] Tor v0.1.1.23. This is experimental software. Do not rely on it for strong anonymity.
Oct 09 18:22:29:140 [Error] tor_init(): Reading config failed--see warnings above. For usage, try -h.
Oct 09 18:22:57:015 [Notice] connection_create_listener(): Opening Socks listener on 127.0.0.1:9050
Oct 09 18:22:57:140 [Warning] Failed to parse/validate config: Failed to bind one of the listener ports.
Oct 09 18:22:57:156 [Error] tor_init(): Reading config failed--see warnings above. For usage, try -h.
Oct 09 18:28:47:812 [Notice] connection_create_listener(): Opening Socks listener on 127.0.0.1:9050
Oct 09 18:28:47:921 [Warning] Failed to parse/validate config: Failed to bind one of the listener ports.
Oct 09 18:28:47:937 [Error] tor_init(): Reading config failed--see warnings above. For usage, try -h.

I then went to Add/Remove Programs and removed both versions of Tor, Vidalia and Privoxy.
I then went to MSCONFIG and removed checks from all instances of TOR, Vidalia and Privoxy
and then restarted and re-installed the new versions again and go the same errors.

I tried finding the older versions of Tor on Google/Yahoo, but they since been removed and all download links
lead to the newer bundled version of Tor with Vidalia. Please inform me how to get Tor running again.

Does Tor still crash using 0.1.1.26 or 0.1.2.4-alpha versions?

There's been no response from original bug reporter in over a month. I'll close this as "WorksForMe" unless
we hear something soon.

Sorry you all for not keeping up with this issue. I never saw any replies in my Email about my post and eventually forgot I had this problem.

Right after posting the issue Dec 7th, I reminded myself to stop being SO $*%#@+! lazy and figure out why I was getting the errors myself. I used to train Phone/Email Tech Support at PSINet/MindSpring/EarthStink for over 5 years and started to feel guilty for even asking others to troubleshoot my own problems. LOL.

ANYWHO, When I got the notification from Flyspray the issue was about to be closed, it reminded me about the error. I decided to show you the courtesy of telling you my solution to the problem.

I started getting a 2nd error that "Tor unexpectedly terminated. Another copy of Tor is already running."

I uninstalled Tor again, restarted and did a 'Search' for Tor. I found a Config text file for an early version of Tor in the Windows directory. I renamed the file tor.old and restarted. (Sorry, I dont remember the exact name of the file or the sub-directory, I was in a hurry to fix the problem and that was 2 months ago.)

Since then, Tor and Vidalia works fine now.

SO, thanks for asking. I like helping others also. Thats one of the few things I miss doing working Tech Support is helping frustrated persons become happy campers.... ;-)

Hi, J E! It's good to hear from you again.

I'm going to close this as "not a bug" for now, since IIUC it looks like it's just a matter of having a configuration
that did something besides what you expected; but please let us know if you come up with a way to change Tor's
behavior so that other people are less likely to run into this situation.
