Actually, it's a .zip file, with the wrong name for some reason (perhaps to make it less trivial for e-mail filters to see the .exe files inside it and remove the attachment).

Exactly so: our attachments with a .zip ending got swallowed by some webmail providers. I don't remember if it was gmail or yahoo, but we had to switch to .z so the mails would get through.
