Description

Currently hosted at http://torcloudservers.com/, we need to create a simple, informative website and figure out a logo that isn't necessarily a mashup of tor and a cloud.

Didn't Jeremy put together a mockup for cloud.torproject.org?

comment:2 Changed 8 years ago by jmtodaro

Yep! I made a quick & dirty design mock-up to get us started:
http://tor.jmtodaro.com/torcloud001b.jpg

It would be helpful to hear what more people like or don't like about it. Suggestions are very welcome.

Hm, can you create a second mock-up where you remove the subtitles (i.e. "Easy, Flexible & Awesome" and the one below)? And the part that talks about $30/month for a bridge might look better in the same font size as the text above.

We also need to have an FAQ on cloud.torproject.org. Any chance you can create a mock-up of that as well?

I'll send out an email to tor-assistants and ask people for feedback.

Sure, here is a modified version with some additional changes based on feedback: http://tor.jmtodaro.com/torcloud001c.jpg

Yes I sure can, if the text is provided for me.

Nice design! I'm impressed. :)

A few minor comments:

  • The cloud icon would look better with a white cloud. The green one looks, erm, maybe sick?
  • "cost-efective" -> "cost-effective"
  • There's no "*" in the text that "* visit http://aws.amazon.com/free/" could refer to.
  • http://aws.amazon.com/free/ is also available via https, so let's put the https link in wherever possible.

Looking forward to seeing this page going live!

I kinda liked the previous design better; the one with the background and the blue links. We don't have to use the background from the previous mock-up, but something that isn't plain black or white might look better.

Since this is just a mock-up, just copy and paste some text from anywhere. Ubuntu has a very short cloud FAQ here: http://cloud.ubuntu.com/docs/faq/

Don't worry about the spelling, we'll fix it before the website goes live.

The square borders on the header and footer graphic look funny in comparison to the rounded tabs of 'what is it?', 'get started!', and 'support'.

the bottom footer black bar with disclaimers looks too big for the text.

Karsten:
Thanks! On second thought, I agree the cloud probably works better in white. The other stuff will most certainly be fixed before it goes live. This is just a mock-up to get a feel of how we want it to look, before actually spending time developing the website. =)

Runa:

I'm open to suggestions for the background. My next attempt will probably be a gray or a darkish desaturated purple. Maybe I'll try some sort of subtle texture or something. Blue links work for me, as long as the area behind the text stays white.

Phobos:
I don't think the square borders will necessarily look as 'square' as they appear in this mock-up. They would span the width of the page from edge to edge of the browser window, widescreen & normal aspect monitors alike. I suppose I can come up with an alternate method of displaying the nav links if it becomes an issue.

The bottom footer bars appearance is a result of less copy in the body of the page, and realistically, this is how it will inevitably look to some visitors whose window height is taller than the content on the page (for example, when no scrollbar is visible).

I could simply crop the mock-up image to be shorter, but this doesn't change the fact that lower content pages may appear this way to some visitors with higher monitor resolutions. In the event that there is enough content to fill the browser window, it would appear the same as in the first mock-up, when the page is scrolled to the bottom.

I think a background with subtle texture will look better than just a plain color.

Would it be better if we had a vertical design (where the content part of the page stretches from the top to the bottom of the monitor) instead? Then again, most of the pages will probably have quite a bit of content, so this might not be a problem for most users.

Really? This is pretty much a non-issue. Likely, only visitors with a very high monitor resolution will even see the footer without scrolling.

Just a question, not really a suggestion. I'm fine with whatever works and looks nice.

Hm, I don't like the green color of "Tor" in the logo. And I think the whole design is a bit too dark. Also, what happens if the white box in the middle has more text than what can be displayed on the page at once? Where will the scroll bar be?

I'll try some adjustments to the color scheme.

Nothing unusual. The white box will expand vertically to accommodate the text, and the scroll bar will be attached to the right-hand side of the browser window.

Great, thanks!

Sounds good. I, for some strange reason, thought the white box was a fixed size and that the scroll bar would appear on the right-hand side of it.

Let's just launch it, we can continue to make adjustments as needed.

comment:22 Changed 8 years ago by runa

Yep, Jeremy is currently working on putting it all together.

comment:23 Changed 8 years ago by jmtodaro

Here is the preliminary page design for comment:
http://tor.jmtodaro.com/cloud

I'll be working on the rest of the pages and a mock faq this week.

comment:24 Changed 8 years ago by runa

Looks great!

comment:25 Changed 8 years ago by jmtodaro

Thanks! Sorry for the delay, but the rest of the pages are now working, aside from the FAQ. I went ahead and made it operate similar to the current torcloudservers.com using jquery tools, as I felt this would keep it easy to maintain. I've also changed the purples to the same purples used on tpo, I think it works better. What do you think?
http://tor.jmtodaro.com/cloud

Concerning the faq: I at least need to know how much information will be in our faq in order to determine the best way to organize it. Will it be just a handful of questions and answers, or will it need a full blown hierarchical style list of questions? I'm currently planning to make it operate similar to the tpo faqs if it suits our purposes ( https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en ).

comment:26 Changed 8 years ago by phobos

I think this looks great, we should get it launched soon.

comment:27 Changed 8 years ago by runa

I created #4313 asking for rw access to cloud.tpo so that I can set up everything.
