#4232 closed enhancement (wontfix)

download-easy should autodetect users' processor architecture if possible

Description

A user reported to tor-assistants that www.tpo/download/download-easy can detect that he/she/it is using Linux, but only offers the 32-bit TBB. (This user has a 64-bit Linux distribution, and needs a matching 64-bit TBB. Using a bundle for the wrong architecture produces bad failure modes.)

This isn't possible to do 100% reliably. One option would be using window.navigator.platform, but that can vary by browser. Also, all torbutton users don't have it of course

How is this different from #4238?

In any case, same comment, couldn't we just add a 32-bit/64-bit option to the download for linux users?

same situation with windows users too.

Replying to phobos:

How is this different from #4238?

#4238 is for users who already have TBB. This is for new users, who leak their location in their source IP address and their platform in the User-Agent header (and some corresponding variable accessible to JavaScript).

#4231 needs to be fixed anyway, in case the autodetection recommends the wrong bundle.

same situation with windows users too.

No. 32-bit TBB for Windows packages work on 64-bit Windows, so we don't need to ship a 64-bit TBB for Windows (and we don't ship one).

Website commit r25209 should make this a bit better: the download-easy page now offers 64-bit Linux in the cases where it mis-guesses your OS.

While we don't autodetect, is this still needed?

I don't think we plan doing this anymore.
