Need a way to count fraction of upgraded Guard nodes/capacity

Description

Part of 0.2.2.34 was a feature for directory authorities to take the Guard flag away from relays that haven't upgraded to 0.2.0.31 or 0.2.2.34 or 0.2.3.6-alpha, so they can't be used to probe for presence of users who haven't upgraded.

We turned the feature off manually in some of the directory authorities, until enough Guards have upgraded that we won't cripple the network.

We need to look at what fraction of guards have upgraded, and what fraction of capacity that represents. Once we see what the upgrade trend looks like we can decide when we should flip the switch and take away the flag from the unpatched relays.

I found these versions that I think match your description above. Is it correct that we consider the following versions as upgraded?

  • Tor 0.2.1.31
  • Tor 0.2.2.34
  • Tor 0.2.2.34-dev
  • Tor 0.2.3.6-alpha
  • Tor 0.2.3.6-alpha-dev
  • Tor 0.2.3.7-alpha

Relays running these versions contribute the following fractions of bandwidth to the network as reported in extra-info descriptors:

  • Oct 31, 56.20%
  • Oct 30: 45.13%
  • Oct 29: 32.60%
  • Oct 28: 25.09%
  • Oct 27: 0.18%
  • Oct 26: 0.04%
  • Oct 25: 0.01%

Please let me know when you need updated or more detailed numbers. I can easily re-run or modify the SQL query and post new numbers here.

Yes, the versions are correct.

Replying to karsten:

Yes.

Relays running these versions contribute the following fractions of bandwidth to the network as reported in extra-info descriptors:

What fraction of Guard bandwidth do they provide?

And, what fraction of number of Guard relays is it?

Thanks!

How are we doing here now? I suspect it might be time to turn off the Guard flag for old relays.

Currently dannenberg, dizum, and moria1 are all leaving off the Guard flag for old relays.

Sounds great to me. Can we get updated numbers once more, just for kicks (it'd kind of suck if roughly nobody upgraded since last time we saw them.

If there's some kind of consensus I'll go change how gabelmoo votes.

You may wonder what happened on November 6. Looks like relays on old versions didn't get the Guard flag for a few hours. The table above is based on the 23:00:00 consensuses, so that's why the fraction of upgraded relays goes up to 100 %.

yeah, the 100% isn't unexpected since three out of 8 dirauths don't have the flag set. I think it's time for a switch?

comment:11 Changed 8 years ago by arma

I think it's time for a switch too.

I've already switched.

Only ides is still running with the config option, and I've pinged mike already. Closing this as implemented.
