Tor Browser Bundle Slow To Start In Linux

Description

I'm running Slackware 13.37 x86 and I only use OpenBox for my desktop and I've noticed with the last two versions of the Tor browser bundle, that once Vidalia says you're connected it takes on average 15-20 seconds before the browser opens.

I hope this can be figured, because the browser should open in at least 3-5 seconds not 20...

Actually I forgot to mention I've used the Tor browser bundle on two different distros Arch & Slack and they both show this problem, so I know this is not distro specific, it's something to do with the browser bundle not loading quick at times...

THANKS

Perhaps related, I've noticed the same thing on freebsd and debian testing. It seems that the request to check.torproject.org is started before aurora's first browser window/tab loads. On a slow circuit, this is holding up the display of the overall aurora interface (aka the browser) to the user.

My steps to troubleshoot are going to be to use strace to track the start and --debug option to start-tor-browser.sh and see what's going on.

katmagic just filed a bug about this with more explanation (#4754).

My tbb debug log is at http://zombiewerks.com/tmp/ticket4732-tbb-debug.log.gz

There is a 90 second lag between when the onion icon goes green and the aurora browser window appears on my desktop.

According to strace, firefox is doing this the entire time:

read(4, 0x7f99e44a0074, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable)
poll([{fd=5, events=POLLIN}, {fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=7, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=10, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=12, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=13, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=9, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=30, events=POLLIN}, {fd=22, events=POLLIN}], 9, -1) = 1 ([{fd=5, revents=POLLIN}])
read(5, "\2\0\0\0\0\0\0\0", 16) = 8
write(23, "\372", 1) = 1
