Description

We should update the hidden service documentation page to show a correct example path for the HiddenServiceDir on Windows 7. Something like C:\Users\username\tor\hidden_service\ might be a better option (C:\Documents and Settings is not accessible, and AppData is a hidden directory by default).

C:\Users has been the norm since Windows Vista, I believe. So I agree with the change. Note, however, that a trailing backslash does not work. It should instead be C:\Users\username\tor\hidden_service. If you use forward slashses, which have been legal in Windows for quite some time, the trailing slash can be used or omitted.

I think something even shorter might be better. C:\tor\hidden_service would be just as good a place. Granted, anyone even looking at this page should be somewhat technologically inclined, so they can probably figure out where they want it on their own.

Summary: Update docs/en/tor-hidden-service.wml with instructions for Win 7HiddenServiceDir -- documentation (& bug)
Type: enhancementdefect
Version: Vidalia: 0.2.17

At the least, the trailing backslash should be removed from the documentation

It's easy enough to customize any example given e.g. to use a custom folder. But, if the given syntax doesn't work, then even the tech savvy are at a loss.

I'm programming savvy, used a custom and readable folder, and still it took me couple hours to discover that the backslash is what caused the HiddenServiceDir line in torrc to fail (with the end slash there, Tor even moved the next line (HiddenServicePort...) to the end of the HiddenServiceDir line)

So, please remove the trailing slash in the documentation, e.g.:

HiddenServiceDir C:\Users\username\Documents\tor\hidden_service

And if fail of the trailing backslash is a bug, then its fix can wait when the above edit at least helps. :)

First off, please don't go wild changing metadata around. This is a website bug, there is no milestone for it, and it has nothing to do with a Vidalia version. I've removed the backslash at the end, and changed the path. Runa, does this look good to you now?

I also filed the bug you've described as #5409

The documentation stuff is fixed, closing because we have #5409 for the rest.
