Description

nickm said in #2005:

We should change our configuration file format so that we can get filenames with some
variables that in them that are resolved at runtime. We already support that to some
extent for filenames that start with ~ and ~uname on unix.

This is a feature request, as opposed to the documentation bug in #2005 so deserves its own ticket

Does this mean we can get rid of SAVECONF?

I don't follow the logical connection there?

If Tor loads a configuration file containing e.g. “DataDirectory $TBB_ROOT/Data/Tor/” and then saves it without special care to keep the original values of its options around, Tor will write e.g. “DataDirectory G:\Tor Browser/Data/Tor”. That is a very very bad bug, as it means that (at a minimum) Tor Browser Bundle would no longer be portable.
