Not all TBB users actually want to use the TBB-bundled tor and vidalia. Some have their own transtor setups/upstream Tor Routers.

In #5611, we're trying to create an easy way to launch Tor Browser from the same bundle to support these configurations without shipping different builds. In #5658, we're thinking about adding a prompt in Vidalia to directly ask users about the presence of Tor Router.

Both approaches should probably use the same environment variable. It looks like we've settled on TOR_TRANSPROXY=1. It will be relatively easy work to adapt Torbutton to check for this var and turn on transparent proxy mode if it is present.

I committed a patch to listen for the existence of the TOR_TRANSPROXY env var to origin/master. Seems to work for me without causing trouble for the normal case. Should appear in Torbutton

Good news:
I tested it with tor-browser-gnu-linux-i686-2.3.22-alpha-1-dev-en-US.tar.gz and Tor Button 1.6.2 from git signed tag Added "export TOR_TRANSPROXY=1" to the top of the startup script. It will enable transparent torification and it's working.

Bad news:
There is a bug. After testing "export TOR_TRANSPROXY=1", close the browser, disable it: "export TOR_TRANSPROXY=0" and start the browser again. First bad surprise is, that transparent torification is still enabled. Even if you manually set proxy settings to recommend settings or custom settings, after the next restart you are back in transparent torification mode.

I think this bug is related to #6566 broken "Transparent Torification (Requires custom transproxy or Tor router)".

I explicitly tested this case when I created the feature. You have to unset the env var entirely, not set it to 0.

If there's still issues even with 'unset' for you, file a new bug.
