Description

While recent changes to the TBB (such as adding a custom icon) help distinguish it, I think it would be helpful to have a custom theme for the TBB. Nothing too garish, but tinging the UI green would help visually distinguish it.

A subtle persona or theme goes a long way to distinguishing tor browser from other browsers. The user should be able to disable it if using tor browser in a hostile environment.

Replying to cypherpunks:

Yes, I chatted w/ Roger a bit about this on IRC, I didn't think of this when I created the ticket.

The problem is, I am not sure it is possible to make a profile subtle enough to not be noticed by a café operator, but still manages to be easily distinguished by a user as not a normal FF window.

It might be better to just leave the current profile as is - with the icon change, that might be sufficient.

I'd be interested in hearing what other people's opinions are, but personally I think maybe we should delete this ticket? (Or is that bad, since there'd be no record that this was suggested, then decided against?)

I think a good first step is to decide whether we want the default Tor browser to be distinguishable from normal browsers or not.

I'm not smart enough to decide which behavior is better, but whichever one we choose, there should also be an option to enable the other behavior.

So for example, if we decide that the Tor browser should be camouflaged by default, we should strip the torbutton onion and maybe even change the name of the browser (from Tor browser), BUT we should also add a custom Firefox persona that can be enabled by users who prefer the other behavior (and document how it can be enabled).

I don't think that lots of engineering effort should be invested here but there are many people who have been bitten by how TBB looks like vanilla Firefox, and the fix is pretty easy. We can even use one of the ready-made Tor personas:
