Description

We added drop-down menus for the graph image resolution almost two years ago. The idea was to use a higher bitmap resolution for reports or slides. I think this was a feature request by phobos back then.

With #7050 being implemented, we now have PDF and SVG graph outputs that can be used for reports or slides even better.

Can we take out resolution drop-downs now?

This would make the website a bit clearer by removing an option that the average user does not need, and it would make the code less complex and easier to maintain.

Why not just default to the highest resolution all the time? The PDF and SVG option appear to be a low resolution, not suitable for print quality.

The resolution of the pdf and svg appears to be 72 dpi. Print quality is 300 dpi.

Replying to phobos:

Why not just default to the highest resolution all the time?

Generating PNGs on highest resolution (here: 300 dpi) and having the browser scale it down to the defined width and height (results in 72 dpi here) wastes bandwidth for no benefit for 99% of users. I'd rather not want to do that if we can find a better solution.

The PDF and SVG option appear to be a low resolution, not suitable for print quality.

Resolution shouldn't matter for PDF and SVG, because they're vector graphics. Can you try out these three URLs to test if there are any differences when trying to put them in a report for printing? In theory, the first URL should work just fine.

After some experimenting, I can use the svg option to export these to pdf_tex for inclusion in reports. Thanks.
