Description

Operating System(s)
Windows System : Microsoft Windows XP/2002 Professional (Win32 x86)
5.01.2600 (Service Pack 2)
Model : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+
Speed : 2.00GHz
Model Number : 2400 (estimated)
Performance Rating : PR2904 (estimated)
Type : Standard
L2 On-board Cache : 256kB ECC Synchronous Write-Back (16-way, 64 byte line size)
Mainboard
Bus(es) : AGP PCI USB FireWire/1394 i2c/SMBus
MP Support : No
MP APIC : No
System BIOS : Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS A7N8X2.0 Deluxe ACPI
BIOS Rev 1008
Mainboard : ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N8X2.0
Total Memory : 1023MB
Chipset 1
Model : ASUSTeK Computer Inc nForce2 AGP Controller
Front Side Bus Speed : 2x 134MHz (268MHz data rate)

Problem:
Everything is going fine.
All of a sudden upload and download go to 0.
Cannot open any programs.
Any browser windows that are open and connecting will
never connect.
Programs that are already running will
minimize/restore/exit and work to some degree.
Sometimes everything will start working after 2 to 10
minutes.
Longer than that i reset the computer.
Seems to get stuck at one certain spot and very little
else can happen until it gets past that point.
Even the task manager will not open with ctrl alt delete.
It seems to occur when it is trying to establish a connection of some type and can't establish it.

My intuition tells me it is conflicting with one of the XP services but I cannot verify that.
Logs available upon request.

Left Tor Sever running while at work all day today. When I came home this was in the console:

[warn] directory_get_from_dirserver <> no running dirserver known. not trying. <purpose 2>

[warn] .......exact same message...............<purpose 1>

debug.log (hung up at the spot it usually hangs)

Jan 20 18:15:02.494 [info] connection_remove(): removing socket -1 (type Dir), nfds now 13
Jan 20 18:15:02.494 [info] conn_close_if_marked(): Cleaning up connection (fd 500).
Jan 20 18:15:02.494 [debug] circuit_n_conn_done(): or_conn to (null), status=0
Jan 20 18:15:02.494 [info] connection_remove(): removing socket 500 (type OR), nfds now 12
Jan 20 18:15:02.494 [info] connection_free(): closing fd 500.
Jan 20 18:15:02.494 [debug] directory_initiate_command(): initiating running-routers fetch
Jan 20 18:15:02.494 [debug] connection_connect(): Connecting to 18.244.0.114:80.
Last entry. Hangs here.

After rebooting I got a windows message saying that windows reconered from a serious error. It leaves a .dmp dump file but it will not open with a text editor so I am unsure how to read that.

Can you reproduce this at all with tor 0.1.0.8-rc ?

comment:3 Changed 14 years ago by phobos

EVen better, can you reproduce it with 0.1.0.10? I'm unable to reproduce it at all with XP SP2 on an athlonxp 2200.

comment:4 Changed 14 years ago by zinco

I have been able to reproduce it with all subsequent versions.

I applied the following solution a few versions back thinking for sure it would solve it but it seems that it did not:
I will try increasing the limit more in tcp.sys

http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.php/WindowsServicePackTwo
Windows Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Limited number of simultaneous incomplete outbound TCP connection attempts
SP2 imposes a limit on the number of simultanious new outgoing connection attempts pending at any given time (10). This should have no affect on downloads, other than to perhaps slow down the rate of new peer connection establishment. If you've got many connected peers, and green health, then the problem likely lies elsewhere.

For details see: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2netwk.mspx#XSLTsection127121120120 and http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=4226patch/faq

Gonna try some more with 0.1.0.10

comment:5 Changed 14 years ago by phobos

Yeah, it sets 10 incomplete outbound tcp connections per second. In theory, if the outbound connections are valid, the subsequent syn-ack, ack should allow more than 10/second. Either way, this should not crash tor nor the OS.

Starts ok but I can't even do a netstat, check email, or make any connections at all. Can't open any programs.
The Azereus guys might have some more insight into this. I have always had the same behaviour with bittorrent clients although Azureus seems to have gotten much better the last time I used it. Tor client has always worked ok. Next I may try a new NIC as I have heard that may be it. I don't use Tor or bittorrent very often at all but I like to stay informed and help if I can.

I am not a network guy Andrew but if there is something I can check that would help let me know. I am gonna try to tcp.sys set to 500 and try again. Its funny the OS or Tor doesn't seem to really crash totally but gets hung up. Seems to me it is the OS more than tor and the best way to describe it is "hanging up somewhere"

comment:8 Changed 14 years ago by phobos

One thing to try, but would require some timing, is to get a "netstat -an" output and paste it here. You can clean up the local stuff you don't want anyone to see. I really want to see how much stuff is to/from port 9050 and 9001 and what state it is in. Unless someone is using your tor node for random scanning, the valid connections should bypass the tcp.sys limits.

comment:9 Changed 14 years ago by zinco

I managed to run netstat -an twice after starting tor server. The third time it was hung up.

I don't get it. You have 10 valid connections, not half-opened. You have one in TIME_WAIT to a dirserver. That should in no way break XP.

comment:11 Changed 14 years ago by zinco

Apparently tcp.sys and the number of connections is not the problem. It has always seemed to be that it gets stuck when making a single connection of some type for some reason. The last line in debug log from the netstat above and from running tor just now is:

"Jun 23 16:55:20.062 [debug] connection_connect(): Connecting to [scrubbed]:9001."

On a seperate note it seems to be using my node as an exit node when my policy is middleman. "ExitPolicy reject *:*"
"Jun 23 16:55:20.062 [debug] onion_extend_cpath(): Chose router ztorproxy for hop 3 (exit is ztorproxy)"
I have not seen this line before.

What makes you think you're an exit node? It looks like someone opened a circuit through your server.
This would be normal for a middleman node.
Is the last entry when it crashed windows?

Jun 23 16:55:20.062 [debug] onion_extend_cpath(): Chose router ztorproxy for hop 3 (exit is ztorproxy)
I just have not seen this entry but it may be just a new feature and that is normal for middleman than no worries.

Jun 23 16:55:20.062 [debug] connection_connect(): Connecting to [scrubbed]:9001.
That is the last entry in the log after rebooting and getting things to normal yes. Twice that is the case. I will test a few more times later tonight.
